Deserve Better
All Mothers Deserve a Safe, Healthy Future
Louisiana consistently has among the highest rates of low birth weight, pre-term births, and infant mortality in the nation.
The state also faces one of the largest petrochemical buildouts in the country, and it turns out that mothers and their babies are paying the price.
Research now shows what Louisianans have long suspected: the state’s petrochemical plants are devastating the health of mothers and their babies. In Cancer Alley, expecting mothers and families are exposed to toxic air pollution emitted from more than 200 petrochemical plants and refineries along the Mississippi River.
More than a third of the cases of low birth weight and more than half of the cases of pre-term births in Louisiana can be linked to toxic air pollution. This puts babies at significantly higher risk of infant mortality and developmental harms.
It’s time to put people over pollution and stop the rapid spread of new petrochemical plants.
